Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford

Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford

Christ Church Cathedral, which is situated in the heart of the City of Oxford, is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Oxford. The cathedral forms part of the Christ Church University College complex, and has an interesting history dating back over 1,000 years to Saxon times. The centrepiece of the cathedral is the shrine of Saint Frideswide, around which the cathedral developed. Saint Frideswide was the daughter of a Mercian sub-king named Dida whose kingdom covered the lands of Western Oxfordshire and the upper reaches of the river Thames.

As well as the regular services, musical and educational events take place at the cathedral throughout the year, and performances are given by the world famous combined college and cathedral Choir.

One of the best ways to get to know the cathedral is to take one of the guided tours available. One tour includes tea in the Great Hall (used for the filming of Harry Potter), and concludes with a service of Evensong at 6:00 pm. Further information about events at the cathedral can be found on the cathedral website at www.chch.ox.ac.uk/cathedral.

If you decide to have a day out and visit Oxford from Henley, for ease of parking, the Redbridge Park & Ride (OX1 4XG) is recommended. A pamphlet entitled “What’s On at Christ Church Cathedral - Summer 2017” can be picked up in church.

Say it with Flowers

A church would not be the same without its flower displays; flowers reflect the wonder of nature. The church flower ladies are seeking new volunteers to help them out with their work. If you are interested in joining the team, and would like further information, have a word with Mary Burton in church, or telephone her on Henley 572971.
