On Sunday 11th November, a short Service of Remembrance took place at Holy Trinity church, prior to Henley’s 100th Anniversary Remembrance Service taking place outside the Town Hall.

Hundreds of people packed the Market Place to overflowing, to attend this service at which the recently installed rector of Saint Mary’s church, the Reverend Jeremy Tayler, presided. This 100th Anniversary Remembrance Service particularly acknowledged the end of the fighting in WW1, in 1918, after the Germans had asked for an Armistice. Before the service commenced, the names of the 312 listed fallen in WW1, from Henley and District, were heard, as narrated by children of Gillott’s School,

The Mayor of Henley, Glen Lambert, in his address to the congregation, reflected on the sadness of the great loss of life that resulted from the war. The mayor said that a commemorative tree had been planted in Northfield End to mark this occasion, and that a memorial plaque listing the names of the fallen had been installed at Townlands Memorial Hospital, thanks to the research carried out by Mike Willoughby.

During the service, there was a flypast of two modern helicopters, and later, three WW1 aircraft displaying coloured contrails as they passed over the Town Hall.

At the end of the service, groups from local organisations, including the British Legion, cadet forces, and scouting organisations, paraded around the Market Place.

At 12:30 p.m., as the Queen had requested, church bells throughout the country rang out their messages of peace. At Holy Trinity church, Duncan and Isabel Carter and Richard Young rang Trinity’s bells for 15 minutes.

Churchyard Clear-up

It was churchyard clear-up day on Saturday 3rd November. About ten people turned up, and they were set to work to tackle the many jobs that needed doing. Most people did jobs within the church. Duncan Carter and Michael Forsdike, with the aid of the long church ladder, carried out a high-level job on the church roof. Whilst Michael held the ladder, Duncan climbed up to the church roof and unblocked a gutter which was clogged with leaves, and which had caused a drip to persist in the nave. Others tidied up the old choir vestry, now a storage room, and removed unwanted items. Jobs such as dusting, window cleaning and churchyard pruning were done as well. It turned out to be a good mornings work from all concerned, but there is much more work remaining to be done.

Quiz Afternoon

A quiz was held at Holy Trinity church on the Saturday afternoon of 17th November. Churchgoers from both the morning and Trinity-at-Four congregations came together for an enjoyable session of questions and answers.

The event was well attended, and concluded with a ‘hot dog and hot chocolate’ tea.
